Narrative Development

Using sound bytes from Serena Williams’ interview with the rapper Common, I helped develop a narrative structure for the show open of ESPN's broadcast special, The Undefeated In-Depth. The interview delves into Serena’s past and present experiences as a black woman in tennis, and in society-at-large.

Compose layered visual narratives using archival footage, audio, and design that elevate the ESPN brand while appealing to a diverse audience of sports enthusiasts.
Results

Nuanced packages for “Outside the Lines” and “The Undefeated In-Depth” take viewers beyond the scores and highlight reels to the complex intersection of sports, race, politics, and culture.

Outside the Lines

ESPN’s award-winning series, “Outside the Lines” (OTL) reports on controversial news surrounding professional and recreational sports. For the brand refresh, we created a layered portrait of the show’s past and present legacy, with glimpses into some of its most explosive stories and the invaluable reporting of its long-time anchor, Bob Ley.

The Undefeated In-Depth

“The Undefeated” is a digital brand of ESPN focusing on the intersection of sports and race. For its new interview series, we designed the opening titles and design system for the primetime cable premiere of “The Undefeated In-Depth: Serena Williams with Common.” The minimalist design uses type over closely cropped imagery to capture the intimacy of the interview between the tennis legend and musician.
